Ride of the Valkyries

Thursday June 26, 2008

Norse legend has it that the valkyries, shieldbearers to Odin and cupbearers to the heroes of Valhalla, would occasionally take a day off from battle and bloodshed, don their elegant swan skins, and float peacefully across silent waters … tempting both men and gods to further mayhem with their regal beauty.

Frankly, I prefer my valkyries to shapeshift into pastry form, filled with lingonberry sorbet and gliding on a pool of almond dessert sauce. What do you think?

Impressive! It looks like a dessert that Marcus Samuelsson would be proud to serve!

Jessica, that’s just about the nicest compliment you could give me! (btw … I think Samuelsson got robbed on the recent episode of Top Chef. Other competitors get cool ingredients like opa and garlic; he gets … corn. NO ONE can cook a gourmet meal with corn as the main ingredient. IMHO, it’s only good fresh off the stalk or in southern cornbread baked in a castiron skillet). Marcus Samuelsson rules, in my book, and I’m still looking forward to the day I’ll land the opportunity to interview him, Andreas Vierstad, and Beatrice Ojakangas (she’s absolutely without peer, my Julia Child!). Takk!
