Swedish "Julmumma," Christmas beer, is an interesting combination of light and dark beers, lemonade, a spirit like gin or Madeira (for its characteristic "kick"), and lemonade. Don't skimp on the cardamom, which adds just enough spice. It's a great holiday tipple to serve to beer-loving guests as an alternative to wine or champagne.
Yield: Serves 4.
Ingredients:
- 2 bottles dark beer (porter or Guinness)
- 2 bottles light beer
- 1 1/2 cups sparkling lemonade
- 1/2 cup gin, sherry, Madeira, or port wine
- 1 tsp. cardamom, freshly ground plus extra for garnish
Preparation:
Chill the light and dark beers and the sparkling lemonade well.
Pour the beer, sparkling lemonade, and gin (or wine) into a large pitcher; stir in the cardamom until it dissolves.
Slowly pour the beer in a gentle stream into the pitcher, allowing a thick head of foam to form.
Transfer the julmumma to individual glasses, sprinkle with extra cardamom to garnish, and serve.
